One day,a frail lady in her late 40s wearing many layers of clothing walked up and down the line of people waiting to be served, handing out little candy hearts.

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself,"Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd." I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friend tomorrow afternoon),so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking,I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. So,I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses,I said,"Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives.
He looked at me and said,"Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out,he lived near me,so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now.
We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him.Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said,"Dim boy,you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
Over the next four years,Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors,we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasnt me having to get up there and speak.
Graduation day,I saw Kyle.. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found themselves during high school. He had more dates than me and all the girls loved him! Boy,sometimes I was jealous.
Today was one of those days. I can see that he was nervous about his speech. So,I smacked him on the back and said,"Hey,big guy, youll be great!" He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled."Thanks," he said. As he started his speech,he cleared his throat, and began. "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach.... but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give him or her. I am going to tell you a story." I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldnt have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully,I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his Mom and Dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its depth.
Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a persons life. For better or for worse.

I have a deep secret few people understand and even fewer like to share.
It’s time to tell the truth:I love the rain, deeply and passionately1 and more than the sun. At least I live in the right place, famous for its damp weather and its rain- forest. I can’t imagine living anywhere besides the Pacific northwest. The sun shines so rarely that my friends forget where they put their sunglasses. The gloomy weather causes many people around here to suffer from seasonal and emotional disorder. Yet I welcome the rain.
People in Seattle will say they like the rain keeping the city green, and making the air clean afterwards. But I like the rain for purely selfish reasons. When it’s raining outside,I don’t have to do anything. I can spend the afternoon curled up reading, build a fire and make a big pot of tea. I can sleep in late, waking up occasionally to hear the gentle patter on the roof. Nobody expects me to leave my house or do anything heavy. Maybe I’ll invite a few friends to watch an old movie or play a board game. My friends’ expectations are low,and easy to meet.
Summer in Seattle is beautiful but exhausting. The sunny and blue skies draw people out from their cozy little homes to have fun. People go hiking, biking and canoeing.

However mean your life is,meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The faultfinder will find faults in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse.
The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich mans abode; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts,as in a palace. The towns poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any. May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town; but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means. Which should be more disreputable. Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage.
Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends,Turn the old, return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.
Whenever a painful situation arises in your life, try to embrace it instead of running away or trying to mask the hurt. When the sadness strikes, take a deep breath and lean into it. When we run away from sadness that’s unfolding in our lives,it gets stronger and more real. We take an emotion that’s fleeting and make it a solid event, instead of something that passes through us.
By utilizing our breath we soften our experiences. If we dam them up,our lives will stagnate, but when we keep them flowing,we allow more newness and greater experiences to blossom.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind. It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees. It is a matter of the will,a quality of the imagination, vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep spring of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity,of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exits in a man of 60,more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows merely by the number of years; we grow old by deserting our ideas.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry,fear,self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16,there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from infinite,so long as you are young.
